Closure of the Gravesend Charity Shop
The Trustees of the RSPCA Kent North West Branch are very sorry to announce that our charity shop at 161 Windmill Street, Gravesend is closing on 31st January 2026.
This shop has been open for many decades and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to help local animals. This decision has not been taken lightly, and we know it is sad and disappointing news to everyone who has given so much time, energy, and care to the shop over the years. After careful consideration, the Trustees have concluded that continuing to operate the shop is no longer financially sustainable.
Our Sincere Thanks
We are enormously grateful for the incredible hard work of Val, Margie, Vicky and all of the wonderful volunteers. Their commitment, and hard work have made the Gravesend shop a valued part of the community and a vital source of support for thousands of animals.
We are facing a huge bill to bring the property up to date and this happens at a time when the profits are falling. This fall in profits is due to wider sector challenges and definitely not to any lack of effort by our dedicated and hardworking team. Unfortunately the charity retail sector faces a “perfect storm” of challenges:
- Rising staff and utility costs
- Reduced high street footfall and the shift to online shopping
- Lower value of donated goods
- No meaningful income from recycling, and increased disposal costs
- The ongoing cost-of-living crisis reducing overall spending
We will now be selling the building and using the proceeds to funds our animal welfare work.
To Our Customers
We know this news is deeply disappointing. Many of you have been shopping with us for many years. Thanks to your support we have rescued thousands of animals and supported countless owners in need.
We all feel incredibly proud of what has been achieved at the Gravesend shop. Its legacy is one of compassion, teamwork, and dedication.
From everyone at the Gravesend Shop and the Charity, thank you once again for your support which has truly made a lasting difference to animals in our community
